Before you sign, list what’s included in tuition versus what’s billed separately. Small extras add up fast—especially tools, exam fees, and compliance costs. This guide helps you build a clean list, spot common gaps, and negotiate clarity so your budget is accurate.
Often Included (But Verify)
- Instruction and institutional fees (registration, student services)
- Lab fees (sometimes—ask if they cover consumables or just access)
- Online learning platforms or LMS access
- Basic consumables for labs (wire, practice materials)—ask for examples
Often Not Included (Plan for These)
- Tools and PPE (see Tools & Gear and Tool Purchase Plan)
- Exam/certification fees and retakes (e.g., EPA 608, AWS, DANB); see Exam & Cert Fees
- Compliance for health programs: background check, drug screen, immunizations, CPR/BLS card
- Uniforms/scrubs, specialty footwear, laundering
- Parking/transportation, ID cards, graduation fees, proctoring fees
Ask for an Itemized List (and Keep It)
- Request a written, itemized cost sheet with dates/terms. Use the Cost Worksheet to mirror the school’s categories.
- Confirm which certifications the program prepares you for and if exam vouchers (or one retake) are included.
- If costs are “estimate only,” ask how often the list is updated and when you’ll know final pricing.
Example: HVAC Certificate (Illustrative)
- Tuition/fees: $11,500 (lab fee includes consumables for brazing practice)
- Tools/PPE: $850 (meter, manifold/gauges if not provided, safety glasses, gloves)
- Exams: $100–$200 for EPA 608 types; retakes extra
- Parking/ID: $75; Books/online access: $180
- Total estimated: ~$12,705–$12,905
If the school provides gauges and meters during labs, you could reduce your up‑front tool costs—ask first.
Negotiating Clarity (Not Price)
- You can’t always negotiate tuition, but you can insist on clarity.
- Ask for the tool list by week/term; buy only what’s required at each stage.
- Request a written statement on what lab fees cover (consumables vs. access).
